Excessive skin and bulging fat and muscle of the abdomen can be a result of pregnancy, substantial weight loss, or it may be inherited. The abdominoplasty, or "tummy tuck" procedure, creates a flatter, firmer abdomen through the removal of excess fat and skin and the tightening of the abdominal muscles.
During your initial consultation with Dr. Kolker, he will thoroughly discuss with you your desires and expectations for your tummy tuck surgery. He will conduct a thorough examination of the skin, soft tissue and muscles of the abdomen and flanks. He will carefully review with you the procedure or combination of procedures that suit you best. Dr. Kolker will answer all questions that you might have regarding any step of the process.
The tummy tuck procedure is performed with a horizontal incision in the lower abdomen within the bikini line. Excess fat is removed, the supportive stomach muscles are tightened and repaired, and the excess skin is trimmed and redraped. Dr. Kolker will use lipoplasty (liposuction) techniques in conjunction with most tummy tuck surgeries to produce the most natural and sculpted results. In the classical abdominoplasty procedure, the navel is repositioned. In the modified or "mini" tummy tuck, fat removal, skin tightening, and lower abdominal muscle tightening are performed through a horizontal bikini incision only. The procedure takes between three and four hours. Abdominoplasty surgery is performed in our fully accredited in-office surgical facility. An overnight stay with a private duty nurse is required.
A compressive garment is worn for two weeks following surgery. Small drain tubes are placed during surgery, and will be removed between the third and seventh day. With few exceptions, all sutures placed are dissolvable and no suture removal in necessary. You should expect to take off seven to ten days for recuperation. Light aerobic activity may begin at ten days, and more strenuous exercise is begun at three weeks.
