Otoplasty surgery corrects prominent or protruding ears and sets them back closer to the head or reduces them in size. This procedure is performed on children as early as six years of age, but people of almost any age are candidates for ear reshaping.
During your initial consultation with Dr. Kolker, he will thoroughly discuss with you the indications for surgery. He will carefully review with you the procedure or combination of procedures that are best suited to achieve your goals. Dr. Kolker will answer all questions that you might have regarding any step of the process.

There are several techniques used by Dr. Kolker to perform the otoplasty procedures. Most commonly, incisions are made behind the ear to allow the folding, suturing, and rotation of the cartilage to achieve a more natural shape and position. Occasionally, reduction in the size of the ear involves the removal of some ear cartilage.

The procedure takes between 1 - 3 hours. Otoplasty surgery is performed in our fully accredited in-office surgical facility on an ambulatory basis.

Sutures and molding splints are removed about one week after surgery. A headband is worn for one month. You or your child should plan on taking off the entire week for recuperation. Most people return to work or school after one week to 10 days. Dr. Kolker will give you more detailed instructions on how to care for the ear, and when normal activities can be resumed.
