Lipoplasty is a procedure used to recontour areas of the body where localized accumulations of fat exist, including the hips, thighs, buttocks, knees, abdomen, upper arms, breast, chin, cheeks and neck. It is performed to correct bulging tissue that collects in these areas, and particularly those that do not respond well to weight loss or exercise. The results of lipoplasty are permanent, as fat cells, once removed, do not return. Although weight may be gained in the area treated, it will occur in proportion to the rest of the body. Lipoplasty is most appropriate for people with localized fat accumulations with good skin tone. It is not a replacement for diet or exercise. Liposuction surgery can be performed on several areas of the body at the same time, and it can also be combined with other cosmetic procedures.

During your initial consultation with Dr. Kolker, he will thoroughly discuss with you your desires and expectations for surgery. He will conduct a thorough examination of the skin and tissues around the areas that you wish to treat. With the aid of digital photography and computer imaging, Dr. Kolker will carefully plan with you the procedure or combination of procedures that will help achieve your most natural and desired result. Dr. Kolker will answer all questions that you might have regarding any step of the process.

Lipoplasty is performed using the "tumescent" or "super-wet" technique, whereby the areas being treated are infused with an anesthetic solution that allows for the painless and meticulous removal of fat with minimal bleeding. Small cannulas (hollow tubes) are placed through tiny incisions, the fat cells are removed, and the regions are sculpted. Under certain circumstances, power assisted liposuction (P.A.L.) or ultrasound assisted liposuction (U.A.L.) techniques will be used. The procedure takes between one and three hours depending upon the areas treated. Lipoplasty surgery is usually performed as an ambulatory procedure in our fully accredited in-office surgical facility. With larger volume lipoplasty, an overnight stay with a private duty nurse will be required.

A compressive garment will be worn day and night for two weeks following surgery, and at night for an additional two to four weeks. There will be bruising and swelling of the areas, most of which resoves in about six weeks. You should plan on allowing a week for recuperation. Most people return to school or work after one to three days. Light aerobic exercise is begun after ten days and more strenuous activity is begun after three weeks.
