Lipoplasty is a procedure used to recontour areas of
the body where localized accumulations of fat exist,
including the hips, thighs, buttocks, knees, abdomen,
upper arms, breast, chin, cheeks and neck. It is performed
to correct bulging tissue that collects in these areas,
and particularly those that do not respond well to weight
loss or exercise. The results of lipoplasty are permanent,
as fat cells, once removed, do not return. Although
weight may be gained in the area treated, it will occur
in proportion to the rest of the body. Lipoplasty is
most appropriate for people with localized fat accumulations
with good skin tone. It is not a replacement for diet
or exercise. Liposuction surgery can be performed on
several areas of the body at the same time, and it can
also be combined with other cosmetic procedures.

Lipoplasty is performed using the "tumescent"
or "super-wet" technique, whereby the areas
being treated are infused with an anesthetic solution
that allows for the painless and meticulous removal
of fat with minimal bleeding. Small cannulas (hollow
tubes) are placed through tiny incisions, the fat cells
are removed, and the regions are sculpted. Under certain
circumstances, power assisted liposuction (P.A.L.) or
ultrasound assisted liposuction (U.A.L.) techniques
will be used. The procedure takes between one and three
hours depending upon the areas treated. Lipoplasty surgery
is usually performed as an ambulatory procedure in our
fully accredited in-office surgical facility. With larger
volume lipoplasty, an overnight stay with a private
duty nurse will be required.
